Oven Not Heating Evenly? Causes, Fixes, and When to Call a Pro
An oven that burns cookies on one side, undercooked chicken in the middle, or can't reach temperature is almost always caused by one of three fixable issues. Here's how to identify which one is affecting your oven.
The Three Most Common Causes
1. Worn or Broken Bake Element (Electric Ovens)
The bake element is the heating coil at the bottom of the oven cavity. When it fails — usually from a crack or burnout — the oven can't generate consistent heat from the bottom. Look directly at the element while the oven is preheating: a healthy element glows uniformly red-orange. If you see dark spots, blistering, or a break in the coil, the element needs replacing. Replacement elements typically cost $25–$75 and can be swapped out with a screwdriver in under 20 minutes.
2. Faulty Temperature Sensor or Thermostat
The oven temperature sensor (a thin probe inside the oven cavity, usually in the back) tells the control board the actual temperature. When it fails, the oven may run hotter or cooler than the set temperature, or cycle heat on and off irregularly. You can test sensor resistance with a multimeter: at room temperature, most sensors read 1,000–1,100 ohms. If yours reads significantly outside this range, it needs replacing — typically a $20–$40 part.
3. Oven Needs Calibration
Over time, oven temperature can drift from its calibration. Your oven may consistently run 25°F hotter or cooler than the dial indicates. Most modern ovens allow you to manually calibrate the temperature offset through the settings menu. To test your oven, place an oven thermometer in the center rack, set the oven to 350°F, and check the reading after 20 minutes. If there's a consistent offset, calibrate accordingly.
Convection Fan Problems
If your oven has a convection setting and you're seeing uneven baking even in convection mode, the convection fan motor may be failing. A slow or malfunctioning fan won't distribute heat evenly across the cavity. You'll often hear the symptom — the fan may be louder than usual or you may notice it's turning more slowly. Fan motor replacement runs $50–$150 in parts.

On gas ovens, uneven heating is often caused by a weak or partially clogged burner. Over time, grease and debris can block some of the burner ports, creating hot and cold spots. Cleaning the burner ports with a small wire brush can improve heat distribution significantly. If the igniter is weak — taking more than 90 seconds to light — it should be replaced, as a slow-lighting igniter causes uneven heat cycles.
When to Call a Technician
If you've calibrated the oven and replaced the temperature sensor but the issue persists, the control board is likely the problem. Control boards are expensive ($100–$300) and the diagnosis is complex — this is a job for a professional. A technician can test the board in context and confirm whether it's the source of the problem before you invest in a replacement part.
